PLM: trigger a revolution in product development

, computers need to be upgraded every few months on average, and the varieties of household appliances also change year by year. The technical conditions of Rockwell hardness scale (table 2-1). With more and more product varieties, shorter and shorter production cycle, faster and faster listing speed, and higher and higher demand for product life cycle information, PLM came into being. PLM has become the hub and data source of enterprise ERP, SCM and CRM systems. It is also the deepening of the application of enterprise information systems (such as CAD, PDM, cam, CAPP, MRPII, ERP, etc.). It is not only for large enterprises, but also for small and medium-sized enterprises. PLM has attracted the attention of more and more enterprises that peel off the isolation paper on the other side and conduct experiments according to regulations 3, 4 and 5

nowadays, more and more manufacturing enterprises have realized that success begins with first-class products, which can control the market, promote revenue growth, form profitability and create strong brands. However, in order to consistently produce first-class products, enterprises need a product development process that itself can become a competitive weapon

role transformation of product development

product development is no longer just a synonym for engineering. A truly effective product development process will involve a large number of cross departmental participants from market development, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, sales and service departments. In addition, the increasing outsourcing level urges suppliers and partners to directly participate in the product development process, and strong customer attention also makes the direct participation of customers imperative. The attempt to optimize product development has developed from engineering department to enterprise, and finally to distributed value chain

due to the pressure of time and cost, it is not easy to develop digital products in the value chain environment. Although many manufacturing enterprises have made great progress, the operation efficiency of the whole enterprise and the supply chain closely related to manufacturing and logistics have been improved. However, most enterprises have to admit that there are common problems in their product development process. For example, in the development process, the digital content describing products often becomes fragmented after crossing organizational boundaries. Each group has different forms of product definitions and stores them in different systems, and many of them are stored in incompatible formats; There is no easy-to-use function that enables them to share information in a controlled way and cooperate with external customers, suppliers and partners

many manufacturing enterprises are beginning to realize that greater improvement can be achieved by better managing the digital product definition at all stages of the product life cycle (PLM). However, managing the change of product information in the whole product life cycle and maintaining the data of design and manufacturing process is a difficult goal. At present, most manufacturing enterprises still lack a suitable enterprise infrastructure, which can not effectively aggregate and manage thousands of different digital product information, let alone support an efficient product collaborative development process. It can be seen that it is urgent for enterprises to consider improving methods in product development

what is real PLM

product development is neither a continuous process nor enterprise centered. Decision making depends on different departments. Therefore, efficient communication and parallel work between different participants are very important. Moreover, in most cases, the partners in product development are not limited to the inside of the organization - because there are fewer and fewer large manufacturing enterprises with the ability of product conception, design, engineering, manufacturing and sales at the same time, and the enterprises become more and more professional, which requires more focused and efficient business entities to work together in the value chain to produce the final product. In many industries, more than 70% of product design is undertaken by supporting manufacturers. The so-called "manufacturer" is actually just a system integrator. In other words, although an enterprise produces complete digital products, external suppliers, supporting manufacturers and even customers have made great contributions to the final products like the internal departments of the enterprise. Therefore, whether an enterprise's digital product value chain can cooperate efficiently to produce first-class products has become the main measure of whether the products have competitive advantages

in the early days of the product life cycle management market, it was difficult for many enterprises to make a difference in PLM because it was generally adopted by single point solutions at that time. When PLM is realized through the combination of single point solutions, the lack of data interoperability and high integration and maintenance costs make product life cycle management an unnecessary, complex and dangerous work without availability at all. So, what is the real PLM

PLM refers to the whole life course from the demand of products to the elimination and scrapping of products. It is an advanced enterprise informatization thought, which makes people think about how to use the most effective ways and means to increase income and reduce costs for enterprises in the fierce market competition. Take PTC as an example. PTC company combines the two main product development engines in the market, namely Windchill and Pro/Engineer, into an integrated product development system (PDS), making PLM a feasible low-risk scheme for companies of all sizes, which brings a real breakthrough. The product development system must provide the newly developed carbon fiber. The BMW Group will test the appropriate functional scope based on the technical architecture, which should meet the requirements of the digital product value chain

the value of product development system can be described as:

product development system = functional scope × Architecture

the comprehensive function combination on an inappropriate architecture can not produce an effective product development system, and the architecture lacking key capabilities and functions can not be regarded as an effective product development system. Therefore, to measure the value of a PLM scheme, we must evaluate the functional scope and architecture at the same time, and we need to evaluate it from two aspects at the same time

first, the architecture must have a comprehensive functional scope and provide the capabilities required to realize the "product first" strategy. The "product first" strategy and policy need to improve many product development processes. These processes involve the whole enterprise and further extend to suppliers, partners and customers. The functional scope of the product development system must provide three basic capabilities to improve the product development process, that is, the ability to create high fidelity digital products, the ability to carry out cross functional cooperation within an organization or in the whole digital product value chain, and the ability to control and manage product information and product development process in the whole product life cycle

Second, the system needs to be built from bottom to top based on an optimized architecture to meet the requirements of digital product value chain. Manufacturers can effectively optimize their product development process through it, because only functional scope is not enough. The architecture must be integrated, that is, only one data model, a set of business logic and a user interface are adopted; Purely interconnected, which can be seamlessly deployed to the existing enterprise intranet and interconnection infrastructure, so as to meet the needs of distributed value chain; Interoperable, you can easily integrate with other systems using standard protocols and integration schemes

importance of PLM

leading manufacturing enterprises have realized that architecture is very important when considering using PLM solutions to optimize product development of digital product value chain. CTOs and CIOs also recognize that any IT investment must be able to deploy quickly to meet immediate needs. At the same time, it applications must be built from the bottom up using industry standard technology to meet the needs of the future, that is, to accommodate more users, to expand other functions or to integrate with the deep-seated process of other systems. An imperfect architecture will not ensure the integrity of enterprise information, support effective and efficient cooperation, and support the growth of product quantity, product category and global in the future

in the past, the advantages brought by first-class products could last for several years. Now, with the changing needs of customers, this advantage can only last for a few months. With the acceleration of business activities, manufacturing enterprises must constantly and quickly produce excellent products by improving the product development process, and strive for sustainable competitive advantage. Therefore, the implementation of "product first" is imperative. The central idea of "product first" is to put product development at the core of the organization, so as to improve customer satisfaction, obtain operational advantages and achieve the business objectives of the enterprise. "Product first" strategy establishes a unified framework for other business process systems. It can manage supply chain, customer relationship and resource planning, contribute to enterprise development and success, and radiate the enthusiasm and desire of every employee in the organization to pursue excellence

however, PLM is not a simple "system integration" - for example, the last PDM, two CAD, another digital assembly, coupled with the connection of an ERP or SCM system, supplemented by web technology, is the "PLM" system - this only realizes the accumulation and inheritance of a technology, only completes the functions of task and process automation, and does not reflect the real idea and connotation of PLM. Although the above technologies are needed, they are not sufficient for the implementation of PLM strategy. First of all, PLM needs to be understood completely because of its complex mission architecture. The selection and implementation of PLM technology must be done in this way: it is composed of building a life-cycle wealth management system for a wider business mission; The adoption of technology must be selected according to the principle of this high-level mission, rather than the traditional historical mission of completing tasks and process automation.
